Explore Southeast Baltimore!
Southeast Baltimore has a culturally rich past. Home to immigrants from Eastern and Southern Europe, Southeast Baltimore’s development was influenced by Greeks, Germans, Ukraines, Italians, and Poles. It was a true melting pot—a convergence of cultures, commercial interests and talents that sustained the manufacturing plants and bred a mix of merchants that met the needs of a growing city.
Today, there are still reflections of Southeast Baltimore’s multi-national past in its many restaurants and businesses. But, there is one neighborhood that remains an enclave of ethnic diversity—Highlandtown.
HIGHLANDTOWN
Highlandtown is centrally located in Southeast Baltimore, and is bordered by 155-acre Patterson Park and the commercial corridor of Eastern Avenue. Highlandtown, in its early history, was founded by an Irishman and developed by Germans, Poles, and Italians, who came to Baltimore for jobs at the thriving port and manufacturing plants and breweries (Brewer’s Hill, a few blocks south of Highlandtown, was the home of National Bohemian brewery).
There are still family-run businesses in Highlandtown that reflect the heritages of Highlandtown’s first residents—Di Pasquale’s Italian Marketplace, Hoehn’s Bakery, and Eichenkranz Restaurant, to name a few. Today, Highlandtown welcomes a growing Latino community that adds Latin flair to the restaurants, nightlife and entertainment in this exciting community. CANTON & FELLS POINT
To the south and west of Highlandtown, the neighborhoods of Canton and Fells Point rest above Baltimore’s Inner Harbor and offer a mix of restaurants, nightlife and shopping to satisfy the urges of any sophisticated city dweller. Canton residents enjoy the nightlife at Canton Square and the recreation at Patterson Park.
Fells Point is best known for its cobblestone streets, its pirate past and its rows of old-world pubs—though in the last few years, Fells Point’s old-world charm has been modernized with the addition of upscale, trendy restaurants and boutiques.

HARBOR EAST, LITTLE ITALY, GREEKTOWN
To the west of Fells Point is Harbor East, a neighborhood that many Baltimoreans say matured over night. High-rise condos, upscale restaurants and shops, Whole Foods, Fresh Farms Farmers’ Market and more have filled a once forgotten area between the Inner Harbor, Fells Point and Little Italy to the north.
Speaking of Little Italy, it is one of two neighborhoods identified by the country of origin of its first-generation residents—the other is Greektown. Both neighborhoods offer plenty of restaurants that would satisfy the any craving for Italian or Greek cuisine. Residents’ embrace the traditions of the old country at fun, family-friendly events.
Southeast Baltimore offers something for everyone. Its diversity in residents, restaurants, and businesses appeal to a broad audience, and this diversity, plus the excitement of living downtown, is the reason why young people are choosing to move back to the city.
